The Cirque of the Towers and
The Wind River Range
Wyoming
August 2008

The week of August 18-24, 2008 Lise Buyer, Scott Cook, Rich Cotter, Patty Kert Dailey, Lynda Daniels, Bill Edwards, Jay Helms, John Selling and Ann Waters back packed in Wyoming's southern Wind River Range between Pinedale and Lander, Wyoming, about 100 miles southeast of Grand Teton National Park.  They followed a 36-mile loop trail through the Bridger and the Popo Agie Wilderness areas, crossing the Continental Divide twice.

The route began at Big Sandy Opening and took the Fremont Trail north across Hailey pass to stunning Grave Lake, which is surrounded by granite monoliths and requires crossing an extensive boulder field.  The most difficult day was a long and largely cross-country traverse from tranquil Valentine Lake to the south on the Lizard Head Trail across desolate Lizard Head Plateau, which extends for some four miles at nearly 12,000'.  Passage is made more difficult by gale-force winds which simply never stop and which constantly threaten to send one flying.  Fortunately we had a clear blue sky because this exposed route, which offers only one sheltered rock outcropping through its entire length, would have been impassible in even mildly inclement weather.  The reward for this was an unbelievably beautiful layover day in Lizard Head Meadows below, where the meandering North Fork of the Popo Agie River, with hidden sand bars and lush greenery, is surrounded by the Yosemite-like granite splendor of the Cirque of the Towers, far from civilization.  The exit was through the Cirque and back over the Continental Divide at Jackass Pass to the starting point.

Regional Spotting Map

DAY 0 (Monday, August 18): Air transit from Southern California and the Bay Area to Pinedale, Wyoming.  Drive to nearby Fremont Lake and overnight at Lakeside Lodge.

DAY 1 (Tuesday, August 19): Drive 55 miles -- half over rough, unpaved roads -- to Big Sandy Trailhead (9,080').  Pack horses take our packs to Mae's Lake while we walk up the Fremont Trail through the Bridger Wilderness with day packs.  We're already in grand alpine country.  The pack horses leave and we camp at Mae's Lake.  (11 miles.)

DAY 2 (Wednesday, August 20): Back pack over Hailey Pass (11,200'), crossing the Continental Divide into the Popo Agie Wilderness.  Continue around Grave Lake--a chasm surrounded by granite monoliths and half-domes--via Bear's Ears Trail to campsites at Valentine Lake.  (8 miles.)

DAY 3 (Thursday, August 21): Hike via the Lizard Head Trail across wind-swept Lizard Head Plateau (cresting out at 11,840') to camp near the Cirque of the Towers at Lizard Head Meadows.  (7 miles.)

DAY 4 (Friday, August 22): Layover day in Lizard Head Meadows.

DAY 5 (Saturday, August 23): Hike through the Cirque of the Towers, where we are surrounded by granite spires and sheer walls.  Then hike back over the Continental Divide at Jackass Pass (10,800') to a campsite at Big Sandy Lake.  (5 miles)

DAY 6 (Sunday, August 24): Hike down Big Sandy Trail back to the trailhead.  (5 miles)  Drive to Pinedale to clean up in day-use rooms.  Return by air to Southern California and the Bay Area.

The journey home
The journey home

Let us probe the silent places
      let us seek what luck betides us;
Let us journey to a lonely land I know.
There's a whisper on the night-wind,
there's a star agleam to guide us,
And the Wild is calling, calling ... let us go.
